“The only place where success comes before work is in the dictionary”. While most of us have no need for a dictionary to know what it means to work hard, we often wonder what is the meaning of success. The dictionary definition of success is ‘the accomplishment of an aim or favorable outcome’. The first Webster’s dictionary ever printed in 1806 gave the description of success as “fortunate, happy, kind, and prosperous.” Notice in this definition, fame, fortune, and power have no part of success. Coach John Wooden’s definition of success (noted above) parallels that of the 1806 definition. The definition of Prosperity; a successful, flourishing, or thriving condition, especially in financial respects; good fortune.

Even when success and prosperity brings fame, fortune or prestige, in many instances it feels like a partial or temporary result or satisfaction. Our human nature requires us to achieve, often over many obstacles. There is more to the meaning of success than merely accomplishment. If success were easy, there would be no such thing as failure. The achievement of something that is easily attainable provides us with no real sense of satisfaction. For example, no one likes to win a match due to the other team’s forfeit. To feel like we have succeeded, some effort must be required so as to entitle us to the reward satisfaction brings. As Sophocles said, “There is no success without hardship.”

Success requires more than effort. The effort needs to be valued effort. This is the first dynamic in the meaning of success. In Robert Louis Stevenson’s words “To travel, is hopefully better than to arrive, and the true success is in the labor”.  It is in the journey.

Are you ready and committed to elevate your success, to be empowered, and to live a life of purpose, on purpose and for God’s purpose?
